Well I finally got sound working. Using gnome volume control, when I set the the "Headpone" & "PCM" to max and unmute I finally got sound (yea). The master/master mono sliders have no effect. The volume control which shows in the panel at the top of the gnome desktop has no effect (I don't know what this is the front end for). However the volume slider on RealPlayer 10.0.2 works correctly

Could someone explay why "Headphone" and not "Master" controls the volume?

Have you checked the mixer settings (alsamixer, kmix, etc.)? Upon
installing FC3 on my system, the master channel (as well as some other
channels that I cannot remember) were either muted or turned all the
way down to their minimums. Probably worth a try. If you google
sound problems on FC3, you'll get more links than you'll probably
want, and most of them point you to going in and un-muting a channel
or two via a mixer prog.

I recently upgraded from RH 8.0 to FC3. I have not been successful in
getting sound to work since the upgrade. I've updated to the latest
alsa, kernel, etc and still have no sound. I've check the bootrom and
audio is enabled, power is applied to speakers. other details below -
if anyone has some suggestions on what else I can try
