I am in this thread late so ignore if not applicable.

If you are installing the nvidia graphics driver (as it seems you are),
once you have completed the install you need to complete the
installaiton by making the changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and set it up
so X11 will load the nvidia driver.

It works perfectly that way for me.
