Each machine has its own system accounts (root, bin, nobody, etc). When I set up a new account, Fedora allows you to configure on install that accounts should come from LDAP. All accounts are instantly synced between all Linux machines. The advantage of this system is that you can then extend it to also act as a NT PDC to allow Windows machines into the mix, and Macs talk LDAP natively off the install also.
Very flexible design for your network logins.
As for files available across multiple machines, I would look into autohome. Pick whichever machine hold the LDAP server, and also have it hold your file store. Then by using automount, your home drives are stored once only.
I hope I understood your question. When sharing files like this, it is best to figure one machine as a server, and not get all caught up in clustering unless you are trying to increase uptime of network services.
