Thanks for the instructions, Tim. It turns out that I *am* doing this
properly, but I still get no output and the pg_dump command fails
silently. I'm fairly stumped!

Furthermore, /var/log/pgsql is still zero bytes... completely empty.
Maybe I could more easily solve the problem if this thing were logging
something... <smile> Why would logging be either off or not working?
Anything I can check or fix?
