The proper place for these kind of settings are

/etc/sysconfig/harddisks -- for all disks
/etc/sysconfig/harddiskhde -- for just /dev/hde

To Patrick: activate S.M.A.R.T. - for the specific drive and the smartd
daemon. Run a test with smartctl to see whether the disk already shows
something bad. If not and the errors still appear frequently in the log,
then disable DMA on hda.
