It would be helpful to see the corresponding syslog messages by pppd in
/var/log/messages. Easiest way to observe the syslog is to run "tail -f
/var/log/messages" in a terminal while in your case trying to dial in.
You may activate "debug" and "kdebug=4" for the pppd to get more verbose
output.
