You can actually subscribe to the digest and reply to individual mail
messages with Evolution (at least Evolution 2). You have to change your
subscription type at:

http://www.redhat.com/mailman/options/fedora-list/

Just log in (mailman sends a monthly reminder of your userid and
password), and change the following option.

Get MIME or Plain Text Digests? Mime

Now your messages will come in digest format. In Evolution 2, you will
see a table of contents, and then each mail message in a separate box.
Next to each mail message you will see an option to minimize that
particular message and a smaller down arrow. This smaller down arrow
brings up a pop-up menu that allows you to reply to an individual
message.

That being said, the interface in Evolution is pretty bad. By default,
all messages are expanded, so you end up scrolling or searching to find
the interesting topic or thread. When you minimize a certain message,
that works well, keeping your position on the screen. When you expand
that message again, you lose position on the screen.

In general, the interface design of Evolution 2 is pretty bad. Enough
has been written about it in this mailing list. Since I do not need
Exchange compatibility, I am definitely investigating other mail client
options.

I will try Thunderbird 1.0 today and see how well it manages digest
lists.

And for the maintainers of mailman, it would be nice if each mail
message would show a title in attachment mode (minimized). I should
probably read the MIME digest specification first . . .

just my two cents . . . .
