If you are using KDE try disabling the arts soundserver startup or
whatever the equivalent is on GNOME.
How would I do this on KDE?
Control Center > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System
uncheck "enable soundserver startup"
No good. Still no sound :( Just the clicking between channels.
