It tried a frest configuration. and failed.
Would it be easier to get a new video card? Something newer .. yet basic? or Proceeed with the updates?

You could try running system-config-display and see if it can configure your display properly.
To get the updates - you can do the following:
- make sure the network is configured and working ping google.com <if it doesn't work> /sbin/ifup eth0
- now get the updates rpm --import /usr/share/doc/fedora-release-3/RPM-GPG-KEY rpm --import /usr/share/doc/fedora-release-3/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora yum update
