Thank you for your patience. I was looking at the wrong Menu option under theGRUB menu. I understand. I deleted 'rhgb' and 'quiet' and added '3'
It booted. and now I see localhost login.:
I have not made a log in yet. I am going to look in the redhat manual to find out how.
Also: in your first mesg to me you stated "
Now get the latest updates - and reconfigure your X (with system-config-display) "
Are there instructions on how to get the updates via the consule only option?

Where is the initial ramdisk image instruction? Where is the title
declaration? You only have these 3 lines in your gurb.conf?

For eg: I have: title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.681_FC3) root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.681_FC3 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet acpi=off initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-1.681_FC3.img
Notice the 'initrd' line - which you don't appear to have.
And the sugestion was to post the 'complete' contents of grub.conf (to see if this indeed was the error)
