OSS mixer api is so simple and usable only for simple soundcards,
that for all other things you have to write special app (for exaple
switching analog/digital mode on Audigy) for every soundcard - if
you have time, then you should start.

Most of problems are problems with mixer (mayby 95 %). From these
mixer problems are 90 % caused by buggy mixer app and 10 % by human.

KMix has worst alsa support (incomplete, buggy - it unmutes every
thing at startup, ...) (version in kde 3.3 is worser as version in
3.2). It would be better to dissable alsa support in kmix at all.
Problem is that this is most used mixer in KDE.

gnome mixer is better, but doesn't have support for enums and
duplicates slider (it puts Capture slides even there is not capture
volume) - this is for version found in FC2.

AFAIK alsamixer (console), kamix (probably alsamixe-gui too) are
correctly working alsa mixers.
