I'm feeling kinda "Duh" right now. From /etc/ssh/sshd_config
TCPKeepAlive yes
I just have to read the manpages to see if this will do what I want.

I had that problem, and found a keepalive thingy to set in ssh config.
Then I found openvpn and now the whole work LAN is on my LAN.
