No. You can say "to each community its own" and that's reasonable. But
if no one has manners or etiquette, and everyone does "his or her own
thing" as you advise, you do not get an open and participative
community: you get chaos.

Etiquette rules express the preferences and customs of the majority of
the community. Following those rules will earn you a good spot in that
community, which of course is only important if you care about your
reputation in that community.

Of course, if you want to come to a free, open, volunteer forum where
people spend (cumulative) years of their lives helping others for free,
and if you want me to answer any of your questions, you'd better damn
well care.

Anyone who doesn't care about easing *my* workload is not going to get
*my* valuable time spent on their problems. Hence, etiquette.
