Etiquette rules express the preferences and customs of the majority of the community. Following those rules will earn you a good spot in that community, which of course is only important if you care about your reputation in that community. Of course, if you want to come to a free, open, volunteer forum where people spend (cumulative) years of their lives helping others for free, and if you want me to answer any of your questions, you'd better damn well care.
