//fido/gardner      /home/gardner/smbhome      smbfs  
credentials=/home/gardner/.samba,uid=500,gid=500,rw,umask=002,noauto,users       0 0

The credentials file /home/gardner/.samba contains 2 lines:

username=gardner
password=_your_secret_

and it is owned by user/group gardner and has chmod 600.
