You can too install the kernel by using rpm directly.
rpm -ivh --oldpackage http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/fedora/2/i386/RPMS.updates/kernel-2.6.7-1.494.2.2.i686.rpm (the URI is just an example)

Thank you both very much! I dl'd the 2.6.7-1.494.2.2 and installed it using the above instructions, and now all is well with cdrecord and k3b.
Whew -- that'll teach me to delete those old kernels, heh.
