Do they pass md5sum check (i.e. did they download correctly)?
IF they pass the md5sum check, AND you wrote them as images properly, then trust me, the CD1 IS bootable!
Time to check some other factors. For example, have you ever tried another bootable CD in your system or is this your first one?
