Thanks a lot. Just tried to format a 20 GB disk with mke2fs -j /dev/sda1 - it also hanged the device. So I will format the hdd in a normal way (but probably not today, it would require some DIY again), but here is:It will help to learn the chipset in your enclosure, which may appear in /proc/bus/usb/devices . You might also open the case and read the chipset markings off the big LSI on the USB2 interface board.
I BCCed my friend, so perhaps he can weigh in here. Please help the young fellow achieve fame and fortune (or at least resume points) by providing observations that will help him debug this pesky problem.

Here the numbers from the board:
1. The interface board reads: 2PCB03U-OI30478 IDE---XXX304718 C26
2. The chip reads: Q811USB 0351WHGA6-24
(I am not sure about the H in the second line - it is written in very small letters)
Maybe it is of interest, that my BIOS does not recognize the big 250 GB Maxtor which is now in the normal internal IDE slot. The BIOS says "none", but FC2 mounts it and I can use it without any problem. So I attach:
