grub-install /dev/hda1 installs to the boot sector of the first primary partition, not the MBR, so fixmbr won't touch it.


What problem are you trying to resolve?

(If /dev/hda1 is a Windows XP system volume and it no longer boots due to installing grub in its boot sector, you might be able to use XP Recovery Console and the fixboot command.)
