update vs yum update

Does up2date have any advantages over "yum update" ?

I recall that up2date used to record what CPU one was using,
while yum does not seem to.

Incidentally, if one has several machines
with slightly different setups,
is there any simple way to avoid duplication of RPM downloads with yum?
