Most likely DNS lookups. If you are using external DNS servers and your
link goes down, many services and apps (Gnome among them) will try
repeatedly to resolve the current machine name. Also, any other process
that was connected to an outside resource may be trying to reconnect
causing more DNS timeouts.

Question: Is this machine directly connected to the DSL? If so, please
tell me that it's firewalled... :0

As I posted the other day, the one time I had problems like this I had
reason to suspect the box had been compromised.
