I am brand new to Linux. I've been working in tech since 1990, oracle, unix, blah blah blah... but had been running M$ on my personal desktop until 2 weeks ago. In the last two weeks, I've played around with fedora, white box, knoppix, debian, and mandrake. Each distro has its own quirks on my system. Either audio works, or ethernet works, but never both... depending on the distro. With knoppix, video didn't work. I guess my hardware is just to new for linux (asus mobo, marvell on-board gigabit, fx 5700 video). My point in saying all this is that the pundits are right... linux is not ready for the personal desktop of the average consumer. I may have the background to be able to trudge the road of uncertainty, but my mother isn't going to be running linux anytime soon. --- mickey <fru5tr4t10n@xxxxxxxx> wrote: > Hi All, > I'm sure most of you will be quite upset to c such a remark on tis > mailing list... > I'm really not trying to provoke anyone, i juz felt that mayb we > could be abit more open > to such criticism, afterall he may really have some valid reasons for > saying wat he said... > > I must make it clear that i am definitely not FOR M$ and i think that > linux is really great. > However, i'm sure there are still things which we can improve on... > one thing for sure, we can't run > away from the fact that linux is harder to setup and configure in > order to get it working flawlessly > on some systems... wat do you guys say? > > micky > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Marc Lucke <marc@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > Date: Fri, 04 Jun 2004 14:14:34 +1000 > To: For users of Fedora Core releases <fedora-list@xxxxxxxxxx> > Subject: Re: FC2 = Win 3.1 wanabe > > > Hey everyone - why don't we just ignore this?
