Did you try setting the depth to 32 or 24 then?

What is in your xorg.conf then? This tells X what resolutions your monitor
and card can handle. X can be told to go ask the monitor over DDC what it
can handle, for some cards and monitors that doesn't work and you need to
tell X directly in the config file with HorizSync and VertRefresh lines.

vesa driver is a lowest common denominator driver, using your video BIOS to
get modes and so on. It doesn't support xv, which is what provides smooth
accellerated video. So the mere fact you are using the vesa X driver means
many things will be unsupported and sluggish. (Hey, it's the same in
XFree86).

More info and less complaining would help people help you.

How did you work that out? That's the second time in two days I see people
blaming xorg as The Demon. Why don't you find out more about where your
problem is coming from before choosing what to curse out.
