Not to be contrary, but wouldn't it be just as easy to do a make rpm then cd /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 rpm -i <kernelpkg> and then run new-kernel-pkg --depmod --mkinitrd --install <version>
I may be out of the loop for kernel compilation, but I believe make rpm is a Red Hat specific addition to the kernel source.
