I presume as long as the apps are alsa aware, there should be no need for OSS emulation. My sound on FC2 is not perfect (ie. I never hear GNOME startup/shutdown sounds, but system sound events are played normally). According to the ALSA chart, my Intel 8x0 audio doesn't support hardware mixing, so I don't expect alsa to multiplex sounds without a sound daemon.
