for example, on my box i have to use this command to control the mixer for my soundblaster:
$ alsamixer -c 2
note that if you still don't hear any sound, the channels probably have to be unmuted by pressing 'm' (I mention that here because I've forgot this several times and spent a huge amount of time to search on other places for the "problem" :) )

Thanks! I've got alsamixer working now.
But I haven't got sound from my TV card, unfortunately. The tvmixer module enables a mixer in /dev/mixer1. How do I get alsamixer to control the other mixer, the one of my TV card as opposed to the one for my Sound chipset?
BTW, sound comes from SiS SI7012 Realtek ALC650 rev 2.
