In case you are interested I found this page 
http://www.skybuilders.com/products/network/HowToKernel.html very 
usefull when I built my first kernel from vanila kernel.org source.. I 
built it because the FC1 SMP kernels were hanging all the time on my 
system, since I built from vanila source its been super stable..
