console ldap client

Hi, 

I'm looking for a console ldap client.
The first 80 hits in Freshmeat are either web-based, gui-based,
libraries, etc.

ldapsearch from openldap doesn't work, and openldap seems to lack any
documentation.

$ ldapsearch '(sn=heijnen)'
ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: No such object (32)
$ ldapsearch -P 2 '(sn=heijnen)'
ldap_bind: Unknown authentication method (86)

Any hints?
