Might that be because ping is SUID root? Try running the command when you're logged in as root, when SUID shouldn't have any effect.
That does not change anything (tried even without the SUID-Attribute set on ping)
Spoke too soon anyhow... After writing that message, some other programs started segfaulting. I couldn't log in as any user, including root, on the console any more, couldn't "su", couldn't "sudo", etc. There certainly seems to be a problem with using ldap as an NSS source for the hosts database.
