I also use IMAP instead of POP to get mail. IMAP == the mail stays on the server. Some ISPs may not offer IMAP. If not... make an IMAP server for yourself, and fetchmail to bring the mail to it. Then set your email clients to talk to it.
I dont know of a good way to share message stores between local installations like you are talking about.

Basically I'm after The Bat! or maybe Eudora, that will work for both OS's......
