Interesting... maybe the poster who suggested turning off cdparanoia's
paranoia feature was on the right track.  Check the cdparanoia manpage
for the correct switches to tweak its settings.  As a diagnostic, you
might try running cdparanoia from the command line with all the same
settings as it's being passed from grip, just to see what the output is
like.
