Aha! *This* is where I was going wrong. You need to save all the 
messages in the folder as *one single file*. I was now able to 
import all my folders, except the contents of the kmail "trash", but
this was easily solved by moving my kmail "trash" contents into
a kmail 'save' folder, then exporting *that* folder into an 
evolution "save" folder.
