I cannot open ".jpg" file with eog

I'm using Fedora 3.

Can anyone explain why I cannot open a file using eog when the file hasan extension of ".jpg"? When I simply rename the file to any otherextesion, for example, .jpeg, or .jpgx, eog opens the file just file.
