Works fine here, running FC3, and using eog to open a file with
extension ".jpg". Does eog generate any error?

Can you run "file" on the jpg and post the results? The one I tried was:

$ file corker2.jpg
corker2.jpg: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01
$ eog corker2.jpg
