In my case, not even that was necessary. Just ran the regular custom
setting like you described earlier. No special settings and no kernel
parameters needed. Even though I installed it on a samba share, there
was no problem at all.

I know, this is of absolutely no help to the initial poster, since his
setup doesnt allow for this procedure.
But, since other people report no problem with vmware 5, I suggest
checking the ISOs again. You already mentioned, they match the correct
checksum, so my first guess would be, that they are ok, but apparently
they are not.
Or to be more specific: Could it be, that the way you mounted them, is
the cause of your problems ?
In my case, I used a burned DVD. I suppose using the built in
mount-ISO function of vmware should work as well.
