	I can't speak to KDE, but Gnome does -- sometimes. I right-click 
on the disk icon, and the resulting menu often includes an item for 
"Safely remove ..." 

	When I click that, the icon disappears. A release or three ago, 
it used to also put up a message after a little while, on or near the 
bottom panel, saying I could now remove it. That notification seems to 
have gone the way of the tumbleweed.
