You were very close to the proper solution.
Right click on the panel and select add to panel,
Then select custom application launcher,
When the new window comes up leave the type alone,
In the name field put Home or Home Directory (as to your preference)
In the command filed put nautilus /home/username <-- substituting that for your actual username,
You can decide to put a comment or not in the comment, it really makes no difference.
Also, you can select an icon by clicking on the icon to the left.
Hope that helps you.
Take Care and Be Well,

After some unsuccessful attempts to put a Home icon on a Gnome panel, I
came up with the following funky solution: put an application launcher
to nautilus on the panel and change the icon appearance from the
nautilus shell to home-like. Copying the Home icon from the desktop
were unsuccessful.
Is there a standard way to do this? If so, what is it?
