I've got Celestia 1.4 on my centos box where it runs very nicely.
I do notice that it pretty much uses up one full core of the PhenomII
processor, though, and that's with a Nvidia 9800GT graphics card.
Yes, it uses OpenGL. I've not tried it without, but I suspect the
OP may be trying to use it without video acceleration, or maybe just
with insufficient amounts thereof.

I did see something in a FAQ about some key combination that can be
used to change the way it renders the images,... maybe the OP should
try looking for that.
