I do notice that it pretty much uses up one full core of the PhenomII processor, though, and that's with a Nvidia 9800GT graphics card. Yes, it uses OpenGL. I've not tried it without, but I suspect the OP may be trying to use it without video acceleration, or maybe just with insufficient amounts thereof.
