I haven't had any problems hot plugging regular sata drives so long as
the hard drive and BIOS support it. Be sure to have your SATA BIOS
settings to AHCI and not IDE. I've done this frequently with failing
drives to minimize their "ON" time so I could rescue as much data as
possible.
