Is your current system Fedora 13? 

If so, then yes, 'nomodeset' doesn't do anything, as the nouveau driver
in f13 has no userspace modesetting ability. :)

Yes, that would be vesa.

well, sure, but I would rather say it's a bug in nouveau that it
doesn't work correctly for your card. 

Do you have mesa-dri-drivers-experimental installed?
