skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm was the version I found on their web
page. It was designated for Fedora and I took it. I can look for the
later version but suspect it will not be much different? I need to
    try it though.

I have not done any extensive trials but what little I have done has
produced results similar to yours or worse. When I speak to my
brother I will find out if there was any voice message on their
    machine ...

AS you said Skype to Skype worked well but I don't know only one
person using it despite there being a million users! I have no
practical need for Skype but wanted to try it. I am impressed with
VOIP, Skype and Echolink both provide good voice communications
    computer to computer.

    Thanks for your observations.
