Nah, forget f12 problems. Looks a lot more like hardware
problems with my motherboard. I think my initial test on f10
worked because the file being checksummed was entirely
cached in memory. With a reboot between the writing and
the checksumming, both f12 and f10 fail every time.

I guess my next step is to try again with the case open
and a fan blowing cool air into it :-).
