I was hoping someone else would jump in here by now, but the only thing I can guess is that the kernel driver for the USB bridge has a bug as I would expect the dmesg (or /var/log/messages) to read differently if it was unsupported. Do you have another computer windows or linux you can try it on? For windows you obviously would not be able to mount the filesystem but it should show all the partitions in Disk Management.
