After some rather off-topic searches, I eventually found the warning
from Rahul
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F12_bugs#yumex-kernel-update)
not to update recent kernels with yumex, because of a problem with
SELinux. So I uninstalled kernel-2.6.31.12-174, plus dependencies, and
then reinstalled with yum and now all works correctly, with no delays.
