After some bumbling around I found that the problem was to do with Fedora 11 and KMS.  I was able to reboot the machine with nomodeset and fixed Xorg.conf so that 1280x1024 is available.

In Gnome I played with the display settings and now I have something that is working very well.

It is a bit of a work around, but hopefully the KMS interoperability with the Intel chipset will be fixed.
