I'm not running fvwm, so this may not be relevant, but it sounds like 
you mike be running nautulus (sp?). If that's the case then removing it 
(rpm -e) will solve your problems with the icons.

FWIW, its supprising that upgrade rather than install from RH7.3 left 
you with a running system. If your problems persist, perhaps a clean 
install would help.
