Note that a buffer size of 500 here works fine with Audacious and Pulse Audio plugin, and it's not a recent machine with lots of cpu power. It may be helpful to collect some details about what audio hardware there are problems with, what drivers, what cpu speed, whether disabling Pulse Audio and switching to ALSA output plugin works.
