For now the proprietary nvidia driver is quite good on GF6+ (latest version), and the ATI radeon driver too (for cards older than Radeon HD2x/3x/4x). The proprietary Catalyst driver is crap, and for Radeon-HD2/3/4 there is currently no accelerating 2D driver at all - not free and not the proprietary.
