This means someone else opened the alsa device.
Try (as root)
  lsof -n | grep snd
  lsof -n | grep sound

gnome-set 3123 cbredesen mem REG 253,0 10212 469174 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libsound-sample-cache.so gnome-set 3123 cbredesen mem REG 253,0 927956 1700796 /lib/libasound.so.2.0.0 firefox 14958 cbredesen mem REG 253,0 927956 1700796 /lib/libasound.so.2.0.0

Looks like only me in there. Unless another user did something and then exited. Is that possible?

The plot thickens. PA *was* started today and it has since crashed. I didn't notice that it had crashed until Pidgin croaked. One possibility is that I have started up a KVM instance since this morning. Any link there, possibly?
