I managed to install the F9 kernel (2.6.25-14) and boot from it as follows:

boot dvd in rescue mode

configure DHCP networking (the pc is connected to the internet via a router)

chroot /mnt/sysimage

yum install kernel
yum update

and then editing grub.conf by hand, because it had not been created by
Anaconda

Now grub does boot the f9 kernel, but when I get to a console login and
type root, it doesn't prompt me for the password. It just clears the
screen and gives me the login prompt again.

What should I do to fix this?

THanks,
Marco
