Dumb question - does ssh -Y work any faster?
A quick answer is no.
As in my previous reply, the problem was specifically the permissions of /var/run/gdm. This cause xauth to fail to acquire a lock. Both the -X and -Y options of ssh invoke xauth, and thus run into the same problem, which is unrelated to ssh.
